Prominent ears can be a source of teasing for children and many adults are self conscious about them. Otoplasty is a procedure that sets back prominent ears.
Most children after the age of 4, and adults of any age, are suitable for surgery.
Before Procedure
At your first consultation with Dr Moko, she will listen to what you would like changed about your ears (or your child’s ears). She will obtain a thorough medical history and physical examination. She will give you an honest appraisal of what can be achieved, outlining the details of the procedure and the possible risks.
Photos will be taken before and after for planning and to record your results.
Procedure
You will be placed under general anaesthesia and the operation generally lasts 90 minutes. Dr Moko will make an incision in the crease behind the ear. She uses permanent sutures or cartilage scoring techniques to alter the shape of the ear.
At the end of the operation bulky padded dressings are bandaged in place.
After Procedure
Discomfort is minimal and controlled with oral painkillers. Itchiness under the bandage is common.
Your bandages are removed 7-10 days after surgery. You wear a headband in bed at night for a month and you can resume sports after 6 weeks.
